The Mexican salamander that never grows up — an aquatic salamander that retains its larval features throughout adult life (a condition called neoteny), keeping its external gills as feathery plumes; it can regenerate entire limbs, spinal cord segments, and even parts of the heart and brain; critically endangered in the wild but kept by millions as a pet.
Neoteny
The axolotl is one of the world’s most famous examples of neoteny — the retention of juvenile characteristics into adulthood. Most salamanders undergo metamorphosis: they absorb their external gills, develop lungs, and become terrestrial adults. The axolotl simply… doesn’t. It reaches sexual maturity while retaining its feathery external gills, broad flat head, and permanently aquatic lifestyle. It can be induced to metamorphose with thyroid hormone treatment, but this typically shortens its life.
Regeneration
The axolotl is the focus of enormous scientific research interest due to its extraordinary regenerative abilities. Unlike most vertebrates, it can regrow entire limbs with full structural and functional restoration — not just scarring over the wound. It can regenerate portions of the heart, retina, spinal cord, and segments of the brain. Scientists hope to understand the molecular mechanisms involved, with implications for human regenerative medicine.
Critically endangered
Wild axolotls survive only in the chinampas (floating garden canals) of Lake Xochimilco — a UNESCO World Heritage Site within Mexico City. Pollution, introduced fish (tilapia and carp that eat axolotl young), water quality deterioration, and urban development have reduced the wild population to perhaps a few hundred individuals. The species is critically endangered in the wild despite being one of the most commonly kept exotic pets in the world.
In Aztec culture
The axolotl appears in Aztec mythology — its name derives from the Nahuatl for “water dog” (atl = water, xolotl = monster or dog, associated with Xolotl, the dog-headed deity of lightning). It was eaten by the Aztec population of Tenochtitlan and considered a delicacy.
