A brilliant blue and chestnut European and African bird named for its spectacular rolling display flight — one of the most colourful birds of open Mediterranean and African habitats.
The display
The European roller (Coracias garrulus) takes its name from the tumbling, rolling flight display performed by males over the nesting territory. The bird rises to height, then dives while rocking and rolling from side to side, wings flashing the brilliant deep turquoise-blue upper surface. The display is visible from hundreds of metres away in open country.
The colours
The roller’s plumage is startlingly beautiful in good light:
- Upperparts — chestnut brown (back and wings)
- Underparts, head and tail — cornflower blue to deep turquoise
- Wingtips — deep cobalt blue in flight
The blue is structural colour, appearing different hues depending on the angle and quality of light. In poor light, the bird can appear disappointingly dull; in full sun it is among Europe’s most brilliant birds.
The family
The roller family (Coraciidae) has 12 species across Europe, Africa, and Asia. African species include the lilac-breasted roller — one of Africa’s most photographed safari birds, with 8 colours in its plumage. In Kenya and Tanzania, the lilac-breasted roller is a near-mandatory feature of wildlife photography.
Decline in Europe
The European roller has declined significantly in western Europe — particularly in Spain, Portugal, and France — due to agricultural intensification reducing insect prey and the loss of old trees with nesting holes. It remains more common in Eastern Europe (Romania, Turkey, and further east).
