A small, bright-orange-red dried berry from a Chinese nightshade — long used in traditional Chinese medicine, a "superfood" of the 2000s, with a sweet-tart flavor between cranberry and raisin.
A nightshade fruit
Goji berries (Chinese: 枸杞, gouqi) come from two closely related Chinese boxthorn shrubs in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) — same family as tomato, eggplant, and chili pepper. The fresh fruit is rarely seen outside its native region; almost all global commerce is in the dried form.
The alternative English name wolfberry is a literal translation from Chinese folk usage; “goji” entered English in the 2000s as a marketing-friendly transliteration.
A traditional Chinese medicine staple
Goji berries appear in Chinese medical texts going back to 2,000+ years ago, prescribed for “nourishing the liver and kidneys” and “brightening the eyes.” Modern research has identified high concentrations of zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, and other carotenoids — compounds with documented activity in eye health, particularly age-related macular degeneration. Whether daily goji consumption produces meaningful effects in humans is still debated, but the underlying chemistry isn’t fictional.
In Chinese cooking
Goji berries are a standard tonic ingredient in Chinese soups and herbal teas — added to long-simmered chicken or pork bone broths, often alongside dates, ginseng, and other herbs. The berries soften and become almost gelatinous, contributing sweetness and color.
In traditional family kitchens, a small handful added to bone soup or congee is more about restoration than flavor.
A nutrition marketing wave
Goji rode a wave of “superfruit” marketing in the 2000s — claims about ORAC (antioxidant capacity), longevity, and weight loss. Some claims are supported (high vitamin C, carotenoids); others (fat burning, anti-aging) have weaker evidence. The fruit is genuinely nutritious; the more dramatic claims usually outpace the data.
