Background
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, to a suffragist mother and surgeon father, Hepburn graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1928. She trained briefly in stock theater before her Broadway breakthrough.
Career
After early labeling as “box-office poison” she rebuilt her career by buying the rights to “The Philadelphia Story” and casting herself in the 1940 film. She made nine films with Spencer Tracy across 25 years.
Style
Hepburn was known for trousers, a Mid-Atlantic accent, and refusal to play Hollywood’s publicity game — she never attended an Oscar ceremony despite her 12 nominations. The Lifetime Achievement Award the Academy planned for her was politely declined.
