Background
Born Fatima Rashid in Kolkata, Nargis began acting as a child performer under her mother, Jaddanbai, who was a noted singer and pioneering female filmmaker.
Career
Her partnership with director-actor Raj Kapoor produced 16 films through the 1940s and 50s, including the iconic “Awaara” and “Shree 420”. Mehboob Khan’s “Mother India” (1957) was India’s first Academy Award submission and made her a household name in the Soviet Union and the Middle East.
Style
Nargis married actor Sunil Dutt in 1958. She became the first cinema professional to receive the Padma Shri. She died of cancer in 1981; her son Sanjay Dutt and the Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation continue her legacy.
