Born Dana Owens in Newark, New Jersey, Latifah began as a hip-hop artist, releasing “All Hail the Queen” in 1989. She transitioned to acting via Spike Lee’s “Jungle Fever” (1991) and the sitcom “Living Single”.
Career
She crossed to major film roles with F. Gary Gray’s “Set It Off” (1996) and Rob Marshall’s “Chicago” (2002), earning her Oscar nomination. She continued in “Hairspray” (2007) and now leads CBS’s “The Equalizer”.
Style
Latifah was the first hip-hop artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has founded both production company Flavor Unit Entertainment and a record label of the same name, and was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 2023.
