Born Nathalie Kay Hedren in New Ulm, Minnesota, Hedren modeled in New York and Chicago through the 1950s. Alfred Hitchcock saw her in a 1961 Sego diet drink commercial and offered her a personal services contract.
Career
Hitchcock cast her in “The Birds” (1963) and “Marnie” (1964), making her a global star, before professional retaliation when she refused his advances. She made her own ambitious feature “Roar” (1981) with husband Noel Marshall on her property.

Hedren founded the Roar Foundation and the Shambala Preserve in Acton, California, in 1983 to care for orphaned big cats. She is the mother of actress Melanie Griffith and grandmother of Dakota Johnson.
