Clouded Leopard

Neofelis nebulosa

A secretive mid-sized cat of Southeast Asian forests with extraordinarily large canine teeth relative to its skull and the ability to descend trees headfirst — its cloud-like coat pattern gives it its name.

Evolutionary position

The clouded leopard occupies a unique evolutionary position in the cat family. It is neither a “big cat” (lion, tiger, jaguar, leopard, snow leopard) nor a “small cat,” but represents an intermediate lineage that diverged from the big cat line approximately 6 million years ago. It is the sister taxon to the Panthera lineage — more closely related to lions and tigers than to domestic cats.

The canine teeth

Clouded leopards have the largest canine teeth of any living cat relative to skull size — proportionally comparable to the extinct sabre-tooth cats. These canines can reach 4 cm in length. The jaw can open at a 100-degree angle, significantly wider than most felids. The adaptations suggest clouded leopards may have evolved to take relatively large prey by delivering precise, powerful bites to the skull or spine.

Tree-walking ability

The clouded leopard is the most arboreal large cat, spending considerable time in trees — resting, stalking prey, and descending head-first. Most cats must descend backwards; the clouded leopard has unusually flexible ankles that can rotate to grip bark head-downward, an ability shared among cats only by the clouded leopard and margay.

Sunda clouded leopard

The Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi), found on Borneo and Sumatra, was recognised as a separate species in 2006 based on genetic and morphological analysis. Its cloud markings are darker and more distinct than the mainland species. Both are vulnerable to deforestation and hunting.
