Onager

Equus hemionus

The wild ass of Asia — a fast, slender-legged equid midway between a horse and a donkey, the onager is built for speed across open desert steppe; in short sprints it can reach 70 km/h, making it one of the fastest land animals; populations have been severely reduced by hunting and habitat loss across most of their historical range; the Indian wild ass subspecies survives mainly in the Little Rann of Kutch.

Speed and endurance

Onagers are among the fastest land mammals over short distances — capable of 70 km/h in brief sprints. This speed evolved as a defence against wolves, cheetahs, and lions that historically shared their range. They are also highly enduring over longer distances, capable of covering large areas of semi-desert in seasonal migrations between pastures. Their slender, horse-like legs and lightweight bodies are adaptations for rapid movement over open terrain.

Domestication attempts

Unlike horses and donkeys, the onager was never successfully domesticated, despite ancient Mesopotamian attempts. Sumerian and Akkadian records show onagers being used to pull wheeled vehicles around 2500 BCE — possibly the first wheeled transport using equids. However, the onager’s temperament — unpredictable, aggressive when handled, and resistant to training — prevented full domestication. True domestic donkeys (derived from African wild asses) eventually replaced them.

The Indian wild ass

The Indian wild ass subspecies (Equus hemionus khur) survives in the Little Rann of Kutch — a vast seasonal salt flat in Gujarat, India. The population declined to about 360 individuals in the 1960s due to hunting and disease, but conservation measures have allowed recovery to over 5,000 animals, one of the most successful large mammal conservation stories in India. The salt flat is now the Wild Ass Sanctuary.

Habitat loss

Across Central Asia, onager populations have declined severely due to hunting for meat and sport, competition with livestock, and the destruction of seasonal migration routes by fencing and settlement. Subspecies in Syria, Arabia, and parts of Central Asia are extinct or severely depleted. The Mongolian wild ass (khulan) retains the largest population but is threatened by infrastructure development and illegal hunting.
