Sand Cat

Felis margarita

The smallest wild cat of the deserts — a compact, sandy-coloured cat with enormous ears, densely furred paws, and adaptations for life in extreme heat and cold; sand cats can survive without drinking water for months, obtaining all moisture from their prey, and can dig rapidly into sand to escape heat or pursue prey; deceptively cute in appearance but a formidable desert predator.

Desert adaptations

The sand cat is supremely adapted to desert life. Its broad, flat head and enormous ears serve as sound amplifiers for detecting prey underground. The paws are densely furred on the soles, providing insulation from hot sand and grip on loose substrate. Sand cats can walk on deep sand without sinking, leaving distinctive spoor. Their fur colour matches the pale sand and stone of their habitat precisely.

Water independence

Sand cats can survive for months without drinking water, obtaining all moisture from their prey. Their kidneys are adapted to produce highly concentrated urine; their nasal passages recover moisture from exhaled air. In the wild, sand cats prey on sand vipers, gerbils, lizards, and small birds — prey that provides sufficient water to sustain them even in the driest conditions.

Elusive in the wild

Despite being listed as Least Concern, sand cats are rarely observed in the wild. Their nocturnal habits, cryptic colouring, and tendency to crouch motionless when approached makes them extremely difficult to detect. Researchers tracking sand cats in Morocco found that individuals can travel 20 km in a single night. When a spotlight catches their eyes in the dark, the eye-shine is a distinctive orange-red — one of the few reliable field signs.

Temperature tolerance

The desert environment is extreme in both heat and cold — Saharan nights can fall well below freezing. Sand cats have a wider core body temperature range than most cats, allowing them to tolerate both extremes. They shelter underground during the hottest part of the day and emerge to hunt at dusk and dawn. They do not sweat but pant to regulate temperature.
