Wildebeest

The great migration

Every year, roughly 1.5 million wildebeest (along with 200,000 zebra and 500,000 gazelle) undertake a circular migration across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem between Tanzania and Kenya, following the rains and the fresh grass they produce.

The most dramatic moment is the Mara River crossing — where wildebeest mass on the banks for hours or days, apparently unable to commit to entering the water, then suddenly plunge in by the thousands. Nile crocodiles, some over 5 meters long, wait in the river. Thousands of wildebeest drown or are taken by crocodiles each crossing season. The survivors cross and continue north.

The crossing isn’t planned or led — it emerges from the collective behavior of a crowd. Individual animals near the front eventually tip into the water from crowd pressure, triggering a cascade.

Calving season

All 1.5 million wildebeest calve within a 3-week window in February, producing approximately 500,000 calves. The calves can run within hours of birth, but the mass synchrony is itself a survival strategy — by flooding the ecosystem with newborns simultaneously, individual predation risk drops dramatically. Even lions, hyenas, and wild dogs cannot eat fast enough to significantly impact survival rates.

Gnu

“Wildebeest” is Afrikaans for “wild beast.” The alternative common name gnu (silent g, pronounced “new”) comes from the San people’s click-consonant name for the animal, approximated in European languages.
