Xerus

Xerus inauris (Cape ground squirrel)

An African ground squirrel of arid scrub and semi-deserts, with sandy or grayish fur, a long bushy tail, and a habit of using the tail as a parasol against the sun.

A tail as a parasol

Cape ground squirrels live in open desert and arid scrub where shade is scarce. Their large, flat, bushy tail serves as a portable umbrella — held over the head and back to shade the body from direct sun, particularly during midday heat. The behavior allows the squirrels to forage during hours when most other small mammals retreat underground.

The tail is also used as a parachute during long jumps, as a balance organ when running, and as a visual signal in social contexts.

Communal burrows

Cape ground squirrels live in large communal burrow systems of dozens to over 50 individuals — far more social than most squirrel species. The burrows extend several meters underground with multiple chambers and exits. Squirrels emerging from the burrows use coordinated lookout behavior, with one or more individuals always watching for predators while others forage.

When a predator is detected, an alarm call alerts the entire colony. Different alarm calls correspond to different threats (aerial vs. terrestrial) — colony members interpret the call type and respond appropriately.

Symbiosis with mongooses and meerkats

Cape ground squirrels often share burrows with suricates (meerkats) and yellow mongooses, three species coexisting peacefully in the same underground network. Each species hunts and forages above ground at slightly different times, returning to a shared burrow at night. The arrangement provides additional sentinels (more eyes and noses watching for predators) without significant competition for resources.

A genus name with a meaning

The genus name Xerus comes from the Greek word xeros — “dry” — a reference to the squirrel’s adaptation to dry environments. The scientific name doesn’t get much use in English; “Cape ground squirrel” is the more common name, with xerus appearing mostly in word lists, alphabet games, and crossword puzzles where an X-starting animal is rare.
