Barbel

Barbus barbus

A whiskered, powerful bottom-feeding cyprinid of European rivers, fighting hard against the current.

Where it lives

Barbel haunt fast, well-oxygenated stretches of rivers with gravel and cobble beds across central and western Europe. They prefer river systems with strong current, deep runs, and steady summer flow. They retreat into deep pools and undercut banks during high water.

How to recognise it

A long, torpedo-shaped, golden-bronze body built for the current. The downturned mouth is fringed with four barbels — two at the snout tip and two at the corners. The lower lip is fleshy. The leading edge of the dorsal fin bears a stout, sometimes serrated spine.

Diet & behavior

Barbel feed almost exclusively on the riverbed, sucking up caddis larvae, mayfly nymphs, freshwater shrimps, snails, and the occasional minnow. Their barbels and lips are richly supplied with taste buds. Spawning happens in late spring on gravel riffles.

Fisheries & Conservation

Globally Least Concern, though several regional populations are pressured by pollution and barriers to migration. A revered specimen fish in British and continental coarse-angling tradition.
