FISH

Muskellunge

Esox masquinongy

The largest member of the pike family, a rare and elusive freshwater predator nicknamed "the fish of ten thousand casts."

Where it lives

Muskies inhabit large lakes, reservoirs, and major rivers across the upper Midwest, Ontario, and Quebec. They favor clear waters with weed beds, rocky points, and submerged structure. Adults stake out home territories along drop-offs and edges.

How to recognise it

Distinguished from northern pike by their lighter base color with dark vertical bars, spots, or sometimes no markings at all. The cheek and gill cover are only partially scaled, unlike the fully scaled pike. The lower jaw bristles with canine teeth.

Diet & behavior

Apex freshwater predators that take large prey: suckers, ciscoes, walleye, even small waterfowl and muskrats. Strikes are sudden and violent. Spawning happens in spring over weedy shallows; growth is slow, and a true trophy fish may be over twenty years old.

Fisheries & Conservation

Globally Least Concern, but local stocks need careful management. Modern muskie fishing is overwhelmingly catch-and-release, protecting slow-growing trophy specimens.
