A slender, leaf-green tree snake of South and Southeast Asia with binocular vision and a delicate pointed snout.
Description
This is a remarkably slim, vivid green snake with a tapered head and an elongated, almost pointed snout. Adults reach up to 2 m but weigh almost nothing for their length. The pupils are unusual horizontal keyholes, and forward-facing eye placement gives true binocular vision.
Behavior
Vine snakes hunt slowly among foliage, swaying their bodies to mimic a wind-blown vine. They deliver a mild rear-fanged venom that quickly subdues lizards and frogs. When threatened they gape, exposing a startling black-and-white throat as a warning display.
Range
Found across South and Southeast Asia, in forests, plantations, and even suburban gardens of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and parts of mainland Southeast Asia. Several closely related Ahaetulla species occupy similar niches across the region.
