Holm Oak

Quercus ilex

A drought-tolerant Mediterranean evergreen oak with dark, holly-like leaves that anchors the agro-silvo-pastoral dehesa landscapes of Iberia.

Where it grows

Holm oak ranges across the Mediterranean basin from Portugal and Morocco to Turkey and the Levant. It thrives on poor, rocky, calcareous soils and tolerates intense summer drought, making it the dominant tree of evergreen maquis and garrigue scrublands.

How to recognise it

The name ilex reflects the leaves striking resemblance to holly — small, leathery, often spiny on young growth and on lower branches. Mature leaves go smooth, dark above and woolly white below. The acorns are sweet for an oak, and the bark is dark grey and finely cracked into small squares.

Uses

Holm oak acorns sustain the famed jamon iberico pigs of the Spanish dehesa. The wood is extremely hard and dense, historically used for cartwheel hubs, wine presses, and high-quality charcoal. The trees host black truffles in mycorrhizal partnership.

Ecology

Holm oak woodlands harbour rich communities of warblers, raptors, and the Iberian lynx, and their deep root systems stabilise dry Mediterranean soils against erosion.
