Born Philip Anthony Hopkins in Port Talbot, Wales, he trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before joining Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre company.
Career
Hopkins made his film debut in “The Lion in Winter” (1968) and built a long stage career before international stardom arrived with Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs,” for which he won Best Actor with only sixteen minutes of screen time. He later reprised Hannibal Lecter in “Hannibal” and “Red Dragon” and earned a second Oscar at age 83 for “The Father.”
