Background

Born in Gibson City, Illinois, and adopted by a Disciples of Christ pastor, McDormand was raised across the rural Midwest. She trained at Yale School of Drama, where she met Joel Coen.

Career

Her film debut was the Coen brothers’ “Blood Simple” (1984); she has appeared in seven Coen films. “Fargo” (1996) made her widely known. She is one of few actors to win the Triple Crown of Acting — Oscar, Emmy, and Tony.

Style

McDormand is known for refusing glamour and focusing on character. Her advocacy for inclusion riders during her 2018 Oscar speech triggered industry-wide conversation. She and Joel Coen also produced “Nomadland” through their company.
