Production
Searchlight Pictures released Nomadland in February 2021 after a fall 2020 festival run. Chloe Zhao adapted Jessica Bruder’s nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. Frances McDormand played the protagonist Fern alongside many nonprofessional real-life nomads.
Story
After the gypsum plant that defined her Nevada town shuts down and her husband dies, Fern sells most of her possessions, converts a van called Vanguard into a home, and joins the rolling community of older Americans who travel the West for seasonal work.
Reception
Nomadland won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the People’s Choice Award at Toronto, and the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress, making Chloe Zhao the second woman, and the first Asian woman, to win Best Director.
