Gone with the Wind

Filter:

A 1939 American historical romance about a Southern plantation heiress whose life is upended by the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Production

Producer David O. Selznick adapted Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel through a famously turbulent production that ran through three directors. The Technicolor shoot in Los Angeles stretched across most of 1939 and required some of the largest sets built to that point in Hollywood.

Reception

The film opened in Atlanta in December 1939 and broke attendance records globally. Adjusted for inflation, it is the highest-grossing film in cinema history. It won eight competitive Academy Awards, including the first Oscar awarded to a Black performer.

Legacy

The film’s depiction of slavery and Reconstruction has been increasingly scrutinized since the civil rights era. Modern releases routinely carry contextual disclaimers acknowledging its romanticized portrayal of the antebellum South.
