Production
Robert Mulligan directed Horton Foote’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s 1960 novel for Universal. Gregory Peck played Atticus Finch, with two child actors, Mary Badham and Phillip Alford, as his children Scout and Jem.
Reception
The film opened in late 1962, earned around $20 million on a $2 million budget, and received eight Academy Award nominations. Peck won his only Best Actor Oscar for the role.
Legacy
The American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. The film is widely taught alongside the novel in American secondary schools.
