A 1965 American musical about a young Austrian postulant who becomes governess to a naval officer's seven children on the eve of the Nazi annexation.
Production
Robert Wise directed the 20th Century Fox adaptation of the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, itself based on the memoirs of Maria von Trapp. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer headlined, with location filming in Salzburg and the Austrian Alps.
Reception
The film earned around $286 million worldwide on initial release and held the inflation-adjusted box office record for several years. It won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.
Legacy
The film helped save Fox from bankruptcy after the Cleopatra disaster, and remains one of the most-watched musicals in cinema history. Songs including “Do-Re-Mi” and “My Favorite Things” entered the standard pop and jazz repertoire.
