Citizen Kane

Filter:

A 1941 American drama tracing the rise and isolation of newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane through a reporter's investigation of his final word.

Production

Orson Welles directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in the film at age 25 under a landmark RKO contract granting him near-total creative control. Cinematographer Gregg Toland pioneered deep-focus photography that kept foreground and background simultaneously sharp.

Reception

RKO struggled to release the film after pressure from William Randolph Hearst, the publisher widely seen as Kane’s model. It earned only modest returns at first, but won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar and gained stature in revival.

Legacy

The film’s flashback structure, low-angle shots, and overlapping dialogue reshaped cinematic vocabulary. Sight and Sound polls named it the greatest film ever made from 1962 to 2002.
