A 1962 British epic drama about T. E. Lawrence, a British army officer whose role in the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans transformed his identity and reputation.
Production
David Lean shot the film across Jordan, Morocco, and Spain over nearly two years on a budget around $15 million for Columbia Pictures. Peter O’Toole played Lawrence in his breakthrough role, with cinematographer Freddie Young filming the desert in 70mm Super Panavision.
Reception
The film opened in December 1962, earned around $70 million worldwide, and won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Its reputation has only grown since restoration efforts began in 1988.
Legacy
Steven Spielberg has called it the film that made him want to become a director. The desert landscapes, Maurice Jarre score, and elliptical biography of a contradictory hero set a benchmark for the historical epic.
