Production

Billy Wilder co-wrote with I. A. L. Diamond and directed for the Mirisch Company, releasing through United Artists. Jack Lemmon played the corporate striver C. C. Baxter and Shirley MacLaine the elevator operator Fran Kubelik.

Reception

The film opened in June 1960, earned around $25 million worldwide, and swept five Academy Awards including Best Picture. It was the last black-and-white film to win Best Picture for 33 years.

Legacy

The film’s blend of comedy and corporate sadness influenced later workplace-set drama from Mad Men to Apartment-inspired Bollywood remakes. Wilder considered it among his most personal works.
