A 1990 American crime film tracing the rise and fall of New York mob associate Henry Hill from his 1950s youth to his 1980 turn as a federal witness.
Production
Martin Scorsese co-wrote and directed Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Nicholas Pileggi’s 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy. Ray Liotta played Henry Hill, with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as his crew. The script’s voiceover hews closely to Pileggi’s transcribed interviews with the real Hill.
Reception
The film opened in September 1990 and earned around $47 million on a $25 million budget. It received six Academy Award nominations and won one. Critical reception was strong and has grown over time.
Legacy
The kinetic editing, popular-music needle drops, and rapid voiceover narration shaped subsequent crime cinema and influenced the visual grammar of The Sopranos. The film is widely considered Scorsese’s most virtuosic work of pure technique.
