Joan Crawford

Filter:

American actress with an Academy Award for "Mildred Pierce", one of the most successful and longest-lasting stars of the studio era.

Background

Born Lucille Fay LeSueur in San Antonio, Texas, she danced in choruses across the Midwest before signing with MGM in 1925. The studio renamed her Joan Crawford via a fan magazine contest.

Career

She built her career playing shopgirls who climbed socially, becoming MGM’s leading box-office draw of the early 1930s. After being labelled “box-office poison” in 1938, she moved to Warner Bros. and revived her career with “Mildred Pierce” (1945).

Style

Crawford was famous for her wide eyes, defined eyebrows, and broad shoulders that influenced 1940s fashion. Her later years inspired Christina Crawford’s memoir “Mommie Dearest”, which became a film with Faye Dunaway in the title role.
