American actress and Honorary Oscar recipient, a defining film-noir presence opposite Humphrey Bogart in the 1940s and a Tony Award-winning stage performer.
Background
Born Betty Joan Perske in The Bronx, New York, Bacall trained as a dancer and modeled for Harper’s Bazaar before director Howard Hawks cast her opposite Humphrey Bogart in “To Have and Have Not” (1944) at age 19.
Career
The Bogart-Bacall pairing produced four films and a 12-year marriage until his death in 1957. She moved successfully to Broadway in the 1960s and earned a long-overdue Honorary Oscar in 2009.
Style
Bacall was known for her low contralto voice — the “Bacall look” of chin down, eyes up — and a strong-willed leading-lady persona. Her memoir “By Myself” won the National Book Award in 1980.
