Background

Born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents and raised in Nairobi, Nyongo earned a degree in film and theater at Hampshire College and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama in 2012.

Career

Steve McQueen cast her in “12 Years a Slave” (2013), her feature debut, for which she won the Academy Award the following year. She has since joined the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Nyongo speaks fluent Spanish, Swahili, and English. She has authored the children’s book “Sulwe” focused on colorism, and her cross-cultural background informs choices across African, Latin American, and American projects.
