Born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, Hayek began on Mexican telenovelas in “Teresa” before moving to Los Angeles at 25. She had to learn English from scratch and overcame dyslexia to read scripts.

Robert Rodriguez cast her in “Desperado” (1995) and “From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996). She produced and starred in Julie Taymor’s “Frida” (2002), becoming the first Mexican woman nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars.
