The world's smallest bear — a tree-climbing, honey-obsessed omnivore from Southeast Asia with an extraordinarily long tongue, a chest patch shaped like a rising sun, and an unexpectedly expressive face.
The smallest bear
The sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is the smallest of the eight bear species — roughly the size of a large dog. Despite its modest size, it’s powerful relative to weight, with massive curved claws used to tear apart hardwood and rip open bee nests. It’s named for the pale, crescent-shaped chest patch resembling a rising sun, which varies in pattern between individuals.
The tongue
The sun bear has the longest tongue relative to body size of any bear — up to 25 cm. It’s used to extract honey from hives, larvae from inside logs, and termites from mounds. The tongue is long enough to reach deep into beehives; the bear’s thick, loose skin offers some protection from stings.
Facial expressions
Research published in 2024 documented that sun bears produce dozens of distinct facial expressions and mirror expressions back to others during play — a level of facial mimicry previously thought unique to great apes. Their mobile, expressive faces may have evolved for communication in dense forest where long-distance calls are impractical.
Conservation threats
Sun bears are Vulnerable (IUCN) and declining. Threats include:
- Habitat loss — primary lowland forest cleared for palm oil plantations across Borneo and Sumatra
- Bile farming — bears kept in cages for their bile (used in traditional medicine); campaigns to end the practice are ongoing
- Pet trade — cubs are taken as pets after mothers are killed; most die in captivity
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia is the world’s largest sun bear rescue facility.
