The central organ of the nervous system, responsible for thought, sensation, movement, and the control of every other body system.
Structure
The brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms in adults. It includes the cerebrum, with its two cerebral hemispheres and folded cortex, the cerebellum at the back, and the brainstem connecting it to the spinal cord.
Function
Specialized regions handle vision, hearing, language, motor control, emotion, and decision-making. The cortex communicates extensively with deep nuclei such as the thalamus and basal ganglia.
Energy demand
Although it makes up only about two percent of body mass, the brain uses around twenty percent of the body’s oxygen and glucose at rest.
