BODY PARTS

Occipital Bone

Os occipitale

Filter:

The single bone at the back and base of the skull that surrounds the foramen magnum where the spinal cord exits.

Structure

The occipital bone has four parts arranged around the foramen magnum: a squamous part above, a basilar part in front, and two lateral parts containing the occipital condyles that meet the atlas.

Function

The condyles allow the head to nod up and down on the spine. The bone also provides attachment for many neck muscles that hold the head upright.

Clinical note

Fractures of the base of the occiput can damage the brainstem or the vertebral arteries passing nearby.
