The shinbone, the larger and stronger of the two bones of the lower leg.
Structure
The tibia has a broad upper end with medial and lateral plateaus that articulate with the femoral condyles, a triangular shaft with a sharp anterior crest, and a distal end that forms the medial half of the ankle joint.
Landmarks
The tibial tuberosity on the upper anterior surface anchors the patellar ligament. The medial malleolus at the distal end forms the bony bump on the inside of the ankle.
Strength
The tibia carries roughly 80 to 90 percent of the load passed through the lower leg. Its anterior surface lies just under the skin, which makes it vulnerable to direct trauma but easy to palpate.
