The thigh bone, the longest and strongest bone in the human body.
Structure
The femur has a spherical head that fits into the acetabulum of the pelvis, an angled neck, a long shaft, and two prominent condyles at the knee. It averages about 45 centimeters in length in adults.
Hip joint
The femoral head and acetabulum form a ball-and-socket joint stabilized by a ring of cartilage called the labrum and reinforced by strong ligaments including the iliofemoral ligament.
Strength
A healthy femur can support up to 30 times its weight in compression. Its slight forward bow and reinforced internal trabecular pattern align with the lines of greatest mechanical stress.
