The kneecap, a triangular sesamoid bone embedded in the tendon of the quadriceps in front of the knee.
Structure
The patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the body, roughly triangular with a broad base, a pointed apex below, and a smooth posterior surface that articulates with the femur.
Function
By raising the line of pull of the quadriceps tendon away from the femur, the patella increases the mechanical advantage of the muscle group. The patellar ligament connects its apex to the tibial tuberosity.
Tracking
During flexion and extension the patella glides through the trochlear groove on the front of the femur. The vastus medialis and vastus lateralis muscles help keep it tracking centrally.
