A family of immune cells circulating in the blood that defend the body against infection and injury.
Structure
The main types are neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Each has a distinct nuclear shape, granule content, and role in immunity.
Function
Neutrophils dominate the early response to bacteria, while lymphocytes drive antibody production and cell-mediated immunity. Monocytes turn into macrophages in tissues, and the granulocyte families handle parasites and allergic responses.
Clinical note
The white-cell count and differential are everyday clues to infection, inflammation, and blood cancer.
