A tiny iridescent tetra of Amazon blackwaters, the foundation species of the global aquarium trade.
Where it lives
Neon tetras inhabit dark, slow-moving blackwater tributaries of the upper Amazon — narrow streams shaded by canopy, with low pH, low mineral content, and tannin-stained water. They form dense shoals in the lower water column among leaf litter and roots.
How to recognise it
A small, almost transparent fish with two unmistakable horizontal stripes: a brilliant electric-blue band along the upper half from snout to adipose fin, and a red stripe running from mid-body back to the tail base. The red does not extend the full length — distinguishing neons from their close cousin, the cardinal tetra.
Diet & behavior
Tetras feed on tiny aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and falling insects, plus algae and plant matter. They are obligate shoalers; lone individuals stress and pale. Spawning occurs in the rainy season among submerged plants where eggs scatter into the substrate.
Fisheries & Conservation
Globally Least Concern. Captive breeding in Southeast Asia supplies millions of neon tetras per year — among the highest-volume ornamental fish in trade.
