Sea Bass

Dicentrarchus labrax

A silver-flanked predator of European coasts, prized in Mediterranean cuisine and farmed across the region.

Where it lives

European sea bass inhabit coastal waters from southern Norway and the British Isles south to Morocco, including the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Juveniles tolerate brackish estuaries; adults move offshore in winter and back to coastal reefs and rocks in summer.

How to recognise it

A long, robust body with two distinct dorsal fins — the first spiny, the second softer. The back is silvery blue-gray, flanks silvery, belly white. Young fish carry small dark spots that fade with age. A sharp opercular spine warns careless handlers.

Diet & behavior

Bass hunt opportunistically in tide rips and over reefs, eating sand eels, herring, sprat, prawns, squid, and crabs. They are crepuscular and often most active around dawn, dusk, and the start of a tide. Spawning happens in late winter and spring offshore.

Fisheries & Conservation

Globally Least Concern. A major aquaculture species in the Mediterranean — particularly Greece, Turkey, and Italy — alongside its companion the gilthead sea bream.
