FISH

Smallmouth Bass

Micropterus dolomieu

A hard-fighting game fish of clear, rocky rivers and northern lakes, prized for its strength relative to size.

Where it lives

Smallmouth bass favor cooler, clearer water than their largemouth cousins — rocky lake shorelines, gravel-bottomed rivers, and reservoirs with current. They are most at home in 16–22 C water with structure: boulders, ledges, and submerged cobble.

How to recognise it

Bronze or brown flanks bear vertical dark bars rather than the horizontal stripe of the largemouth. The upper jaw stops at the rear of the eye — not beyond it. Red eyes are a telltale field mark. The dorsal fin is continuous, only shallowly notched.

Diet & behavior

Crayfish are the dietary staple; smallmouths also take minnows, hellgrammites, and adult insects. They hunt by sight in clear water, often patrolling drop-offs and current seams. Spawning males excavate gravel nests in late spring and stand guard until fry disperse.

Fisheries & Conservation

Globally Least Concern. A bedrock species for stream and lake anglers in the United States and Canada; introductions have spread the species widely, sometimes displacing native fishes.
