The largest of all citrus fruits — a yellow-green Southeast Asian giant with thick pith and sweet, mild grapefruit-like flesh, an ancestor species of the modern grapefruit.
The biggest citrus fruit on Earth
Pomelos are the largest of all citrus fruits, often weighing 1-3 kilograms with diameters of 15-25 cm. The thick yellow-green skin and dense pith account for much of the weight; the actual edible flesh inside is roughly the size of a large grapefruit.
This thick rind serves the fruit well — pomelos ship and store far better than other citrus, surviving weeks of room-temperature storage without quality loss.
The grapefruit’s parent
Modern grapefruit was created in 17th-century Barbados as a chance hybrid between pomelo and sweet orange. So pomelo is genetically the parent of grapefruit — and pomelo is one of the three “true citrus” ancestor species (with citron and mandarin) from which all other citrus descended.
In flavor, pomelo is milder and less bitter than grapefruit — the bitter compounds that make grapefruit polarizing are largely absent in pomelo.
Lunar New Year traditions
In Chinese culture, pomelos are a symbol of family unity, abundance, and good fortune at Lunar New Year. The fruit is often given as a gift in pairs (signifying balance) and displayed as a centerpiece.
The Mandarin pun connection: 柚 (yòu, pomelo) sounds similar to 有 (yǒu, “to have”), so eating pomelo at New Year wishes prosperity.
Thai pomelo salad
Yum som-o — Thai pomelo salad — combines fresh pomelo segments with chili, lime, fish sauce, peanuts, and sometimes shrimp or chicken. The fruit’s firm flesh holds up to bold flavors and adds sweet-tart juiciness without adding raw onion or chili intensity.
It’s a staple of Thai street food and home cooking, especially in northern Thailand where pomelos are widely cultivated.
A quirk: drug interactions
Like grapefruit, pomelo can interact dangerously with certain medications — especially statins and some blood-pressure drugs. The same furanocoumarin compounds in grapefruit are present (sometimes in higher concentrations) in pomelo.
Patients on statins or related drugs are advised to check whether pomelo is on their interaction-warning list, even if they’ve cleared grapefruit specifically.
