One of the world's largest snakes, a Southeast Asian giant now infamous as an invasive species in the Everglades of Florida.
Description
The Burmese python is a massive constrictor patterned with large dark brown blotches edged in cream over a tan background, with a distinctive arrowhead marking on the head. Adults typically reach 4 to 5 m but record specimens have exceeded 7 m and 90 kg.
Behavior
A patient ambush predator, the Burmese python uses heat-sensing pits along the lips to detect warm-blooded prey at night. It seizes animals as large as adult deer, constricts them, and swallows them whole. Females coil around their clutches and shiver to incubate the eggs.
Range
Native to South and Southeast Asia from eastern India and southern China to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Released and escaped pets have established a self-sustaining invasive population in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s.
