An aggressive, slim Australian elapid responsible for most snakebite deaths on the continent and possessing the world's second-most toxic venom.
Description
The eastern brown snake is a slim, fast elapid usually 1.5 to 2 m long. Ground colour ranges from pale tan and orange to dark chocolate, often with a brighter belly speckled with grey, orange, or pink. The head is small and only slightly distinct from the neck.
Behavior
Eastern brown snakes are diurnal active hunters that thrive in agricultural landscapes where rodents are abundant. When threatened they raise the forebody in a tight S-coil, flatten the neck, and strike repeatedly. Their venom is exceptionally toxic and acts quickly on blood coagulation.
Range
Found across most of eastern and central Australia, including the Adelaide and Sydney suburbs, and also through southern New Guinea. The species has prospered alongside European agriculture and the introduction of house mice.
