A slim, brown American tree snake with an extraordinary pointed snout, hunting lizards in the foliage of dry forests from Mexico to Argentina.
Description
The brown vine snake is an extremely slim, mid-brown tree snake usually 1.5 m long, with a long pointed snout, narrow head, and large amber eyes. The body is so thin in cross-section that the snake closely resembles a wind-blown vine even in motion.
Behavior
A diurnal arboreal predator, the brown vine snake sways gently as it moves to look like a twig, striking lizards on branches with rear fangs that deliver a mild venom. When threatened it gapes the mouth to reveal a black-and-white interior as a startle display.
Range
Distributed widely from southern Texas and Arizona through Central and South America to northern Argentina. The genus Oxybelis contains four other closely related species across the same broad neotropical range.
