Born in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, Flynn worked in New Guinea as a plantation overseer before pursuing acting in Britain and signing with Warner Bros. in Hollywood in 1935.

Career

“Captain Blood” (1935) made him a star. With director Michael Curtiz he led “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” and “The Sea Hawk.” He played George Armstrong Custer in “They Died with Their Boots On” and continued in adventure, war, and Western films through the 1940s and 1950s.

Flynn became the defining cinematic swashbuckler of the era, combining athletic physicality with light comic timing and on-screen ease.
