Filter:

American actor, dancer, singer, director, and choreographer who reshaped the Hollywood musical with athletic, naturalistic dance.

Background

Born Eugene Curran Kelly in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he ran a dance studio with his family before moving to New York and Broadway, where he starred in “Pal Joey.”

Career

He signed with MGM in 1942 and worked across “Anchors Aweigh,” “On the Town,” “An American in Paris,” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” co-directing several musicals with Stanley Donen. His dance with Jerry the Mouse in “Anchors Aweigh” pioneered live-action and animation integration.

Style

Kelly brought athleticism, sportswear aesthetics, and choreography rooted in everyday movement to the musical, contrasting with Fred Astaire’s elegant ballroom tradition.
