Lee Marvin

Filter:

American actor of the classical and New Hollywood eras, Academy Award winner for Cat Ballou and lead of war films and Westerns.

Background

Born Lamont Waltman Marvin Jr. in New York City, he served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific theatre and was wounded at the Battle of Saipan before becoming an actor.

Career

After tough-guy supporting roles in 1950s noir and Westerns, he played the dual roles of Kid Shelleen and Tim Strawn in “Cat Ballou,” winning Best Actor. He led Robert Aldrich’s “The Dirty Dozen,” John Boorman’s “Point Blank,” and “The Big Red One,” drawing on his own combat experience.

Style

Marvin’s gravel voice, blunt physical bearing, and willingness to play violent characters reshaped American screen masculinity in the 1960s and 1970s.
