Background

Born in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, Shah trained at the National School of Drama in Delhi and the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, becoming a leading figure of Indian parallel cinema.

Career

He starred in Shyam Benegal’s “Nishant,” “Manthan,” and “Bhumika,” and in Sai Paranjpye’s “Sparsh,” for which he won his first National Film Award. He took international roles in Mira Nair’s “Monsoon Wedding” and Stephen Norrington’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” as Captain Nemo, and continues in Hindi-language drama.
