Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Newman served in the United States Navy during the Second World War, then studied at Kenyon College and the Yale School of Drama before joining the Actors Studio.
Career
He led “The Hustler” as pool shark Eddie Felson, reprising the role twenty-five years later in Martin Scorsese’s “The Color of Money,” for which he finally won Best Actor. He starred opposite Robert Redford in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting” and founded the Newman’s Own food company, donating all profits to charity.
