Background

Born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Mexico, to a Mixtec mother and Trique father, Aparicio trained as a preschool teacher. She accompanied her sister to an audition for Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” (2018) and was cast in the lead role.

Career

“Roma” won three Academy Awards and was nominated for ten. Aparicio became the first Indigenous Mexican woman ever nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars and only the second Mexican performer in the category.

Style

Aparicio is recognized for advocating for Indigenous Mexican languages and cultures, having appeared on the cover of Vogue Mexico in 2019. She is a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Indigenous Peoples and continues acting alongside her teaching work.
